Update on supported versions

Migrating a turbine design project from one version of a calculation engine to another is a complex task, as inevitably some loads will change. Therefore, any new version of Bladed released is supported for many years, even past the point where it is superseded by a newer version. We currently maintain Bladed 4.6 and newer in full support; these versions receive regular maintenance updates and fixes. We will continue to provide email support and carry out investigations into issues identified in Bladed 4.4 and 4.5, but fixes will only be made in specific cases according to demand.
 


Log of known issues

Each Bladed update includes improvements and fixes to the engineering code that addresses the shortcomings in previous versions. When making engineering decisions based on Bladed results, it's important to understand which version of Bladed was used and whether any code issues in that version are likely to have impacted the load calculation results. The log of known issues spreadsheet contains a filtered table, so a methodical check can be made. 
 


Verification report for Bladed-Sesam interface, including superelement functionality

Bladed engineers from Bristol, UK and Sesam engineers from Hovik, Norway, have been working together to verify the interfaces between the two tools. The study included checking the conversion of a Sesam support structure model to a Bladed integrated model and a Bladed superelement model. It was shown that the two software packages give comparable load and deflection predictions when using either integrated or superelement modelling approaches for the support structure. Conversion of the simulation results and support structure model from Bladed to Sesam formats was also verified. 

The verification study allows designers to use Sesam together with Bladed in a single workflow with confidence in the accuracy of the conversions between the tools. The verification report has been published and
is available here.
 


Bladed Cloud

Bladed Cloud is a secure platform created and maintained by DNV GL. It provides users with the capability to run simulations and calculations without needing to set up and maintain a local IT infrastructure. It is hosted on the Amazon Web Services platform and uses the Amazon “Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2)” as its computing backbone, allowing users to scale up/down their hardware requirement automatically and transparently. This capability is delivered to users through the Bladed Batch Framework, which allows users to specify that jobs run in the Bladed Cloud (as opposed to Batch Runners on the local network).

The use of Bladed Cloud is tracked and billed based on computational time used. This enables users to obtain significantly higher throughput than their traditional setups will allow, yet pay for just the total time they have used.

Andrew Cordle, Senior Engineer, Turbine Engineering Support said: "On a recent offshore project we were faced with the seemingly impossible task of running over 130,000 ten-minute fatigue simulations in just a few weeks. However, with the use of Bladed Cloud we could complete batches of around 15,000 simulations overnight and finished all the simulations on time. This really is a game-changing technology for running large-scale Bladed calculations.”

To coincide with Windergy (India’s main wind conference), TES and STP delivered an open day with an agenda aimed at turbine manufacturers and independent power producers. Rob Rawlinson-Smith and William Collier, both senior TES members, delivered presentations to a full room of avid engineers.

China open day in October
A one-day Bladed open day is being planned in Beijing, China on Monday 16 October. The open day will coincide with the China Wind Power event, enabling wind professionals to take advantage our of open day, whilst attending China’s flagship conference. Please email
